Thai funk trio Khruangbin has announced their first United States tour. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this band, here is what you need to know.
Their name alone suggests a form of mystery and uniqueness that can’t go unnoticed. Translating literally in Thai, “Engine Fly”, Khruangbin is comprised of just three musicians. With Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Johnson on drums, these three hail from Houston, Texas. The band just released their debut album, The Universe Smiles Upon You, in November of last year. Having only played a handful of shows in the US this year, the band looks to begin their first tour in the states in September.
Khruangbin’s sound has been inspired by a collection of Thai funk cassette tapes, dating from the sixties and seventies. Fusing soul and surf rock together, this band creates soothing sounds that will leave you wanting to hear more.
If you have never heard Khruangbin play, we suggest you take a listen to their album stream below. For more music and other information, please visit the band’s bandcamp as well as their main website here. Unfortunately for us in the states, Khruangbin will be overseas performing with Father John Misty into the summer, as well as a few other tour dates in other countries. Looks like we will all have to be patient until September, when we get our turn. If your located in Philadelphia, mark your calendar for September 7, and meet us at Jonny Brenda’s. Tickets for this event go on sale this Friday, May 6 and can be found here.
