After being rescheduled due to the snowstorm at the end of January, TAUK brought some super hot fire to warm us all up on Groundhogs day.
Local electro-soul trio Wax Future opened up the night of music with a superb set full of shredding guitar, some funky beats and A+ visuals. Unfortunately, the set was pretty early in the night so the crowd was still filing in. Needless to say, it was a great set completed with class and those who could not make it out until later missed some good ol’ funk.
Second on the night, Philly based jam rockers Catullus came out swinging. Taking us on a sonic journey with their eclectic blend of electronic rock, they did not disappoint. It’s no surprise that Catullus has been on the rise recently. If it is any testament to their ever-evolving live show, it is probably safe to say that a lot of the crowd that came out on Tuesday would have been content with calling it a night. Highlights from their opening set include a super funked out new song “Sugaboof,” and a stellar cover of Pink Floyd’s “Sheep.” Keep your eyes peeled for Catullus making their way through the festival scene this summer and for their new album A Maze In Life.
After two great openers, anticipation was high for the headlining set from New York’s up and coming instrumental fusion rockers TAUK. How could the night possibly get any better? Well, with pure professionalism and immense amounts of talent, TAUK did not disappoint. In fact, I’m surprised the place didn’t burn down because they brought the HEAT. It’s really something special and rare when a band comes on stage and makes you feel so many different things all at once. TAUK provided all of us with that indescribable feeling on Tuesday. Everything that the band does is the definition of fusion. They were absolutely rocking out; they were throwing us some funk, slow burners, and just overall impressive musicianship. They even got the crowd going later on in their set with an instrumental cover of Nirvana’s “In Bloom.” What I took away from their set is this – TAUK deserves every ounce of recognition that they have gotten in the past couple of years and they deserve everything that is coming their way in the future. Catch them on tour this winter with Umphrey’s Mcgee!
