Reports coming from Billboard this morning are suggesting that another Grateful Dead project featuring original members of the band could be in the works. It is very likely that this new side project will not be a core-four project featuring Weir, Lesh, Hart, and Kreutzman, but rather a gathering of one or two original Grateful Dead members partnering with other musicians a la Phil Lesh and Friends or Bob Weir and Ratdog. Based on the information available, this project is expected to be featuring John Mayer alongside Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, but it is not known if any other members of the Grateful Dead will be involved at this time.
Earlier this year, a photo featuring Bob Weir, John Mayer, and Phish bassist Mike Gordon emerged that raised suspicions among Deadheads that such a project might arise. The photo shows the three musicians in a rehearsal room in Bob Weir’s TRI Studios. There is not much information regarding who else could be filling the roles of drums and keys for this project, but with Gordon potentially taking the role of bassist, it is likely that Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh will not be involved in this side project.
We’ll likely be hearing more information on this upcoming project in the next few weeks, but for now be sure to check out Bob Weir and John Mayer performing Truckin’ on the Late Late Show earlier this year.
